Colour Analysis FAQs

What is colour analysis?

Colour analysis is a professional method used to identify the colours that best complement a person’s skin tone, hair and eyes. A trained colour analyst uses fabric drapes and a structured process to assess warm or cool undertones and identify the most flattering seasonal palette. Clients can then use that personalised palette when choosing clothing, makeup and hair colour.

Colour analysis works by comparing carefully selected fabric drapes against the face. The analyst looks at how each colour affects the complexion, including brightness, shadows, redness and overall balance. Colours that match the client’s undertone create harmony, while unsuitable colours can make the skin look dull or uneven. The analyst then identifies the seasonal palette that suits the client best.

The Four Seasons method groups colour palettes into Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Spring and Autumn are warm, while Summer and Winter are cool. Each season also differs in brightness, softness and depth. LCS colour analysis training develops this foundation through colour psychology, secondary influences and an introduction to the 12-sub-season system. After qualifying, students can progress to the Sub-Season Colour Analysis Masterclass Certificate.

How do I train as a colour analyst?

To train as a colour analyst, choose an accredited colour analysis course that combines theory with practical draping and real client case studies. The LCS Advanced Diploma is a 9-week colour analysis course online covering colour theory, the Four Seasons method, colour psychology, genetics, in-person and online draping, client consultations and business setup. Training includes live weekly masterclasses, tutor feedback and six client case studies.

No previous colour analysis or design experience is required. This course starts with the foundations and develops your technical knowledge, practical skills and confidence week by week. An interest in colour, style or helping clients is useful, but the professional methods are taught during the course.

The Advanced Diploma runs for 9 weeks, with one teaching module released each week. You complete practical work, case studies and the final assessment alongside the course. Modules are paced to support learning, and you retain lifetime access to the learning platform after completion.

Allow approximately 3 to 4 hours each week for video lessons, live sessions, practical challenges and assessments. You may need additional time to complete your six client case studies.

Yes. Your professional colour kit is shipped before the course starts and includes:

• Four luxury seasonal colour fans, with around 100 shades in each
• A white draping bib
• More than 40 professional colour drapes
• A colour wheel
• A branded kit bag

Shipping charges are added at checkout where applicable.

Yes. Successful students receive two certificates: an Advanced Diploma accredited by London College of Style and the British Accreditation Council, plus CPD Certification worth 40 hours of Continuing Professional Development. These qualifications demonstrate that you have completed professional colour analysis training.

No qualification is legally required to call yourself a colour analyst in the UK. However, completing an accredited colour analysis course gives you structured training, practical accuracy, professional credibility and the confidence to charge clients for your services.

The colour analysis course costs £1,530 including VAT. You can pay in full or in three interest-free instalments of £510. Course fees are reviewed regularly, so use the latest price shown on this page when budgeting or quoting the course.

Yes. Qualified colour analysts can charge for one-to-one consultations and increase their income through group workshops, online consultations, events, brand collaborations, affiliate partnerships and speaking or media work. Earnings depend on your pricing, client volume and service packages.

Colour analysis is typically offered as a self-employed or freelance service, so earnings vary. Many UK analysts charge between £150 and £500 for a one-to-one consultation, depending on experience, location, reputation and the service included. Workshops, corporate events, online consultations and partnerships can create additional income.

You can work as a standalone colour analyst or add colour analysis to an existing styling service. Personal and celebrity stylists can use colour analysis to make more confident wardrobe, shopping and event recommendations. Students who want broader styling skills can also explore the Personal Styling Advanced Diploma.

Start by completing accredited colour analysis training and practising with real clients. Build a portfolio through friends, family and local clients, then develop clear pricing, service packages and marketing. The LCS Advanced Diploma includes guidance on setting up and growing a colour analysis business, including pricing, packaging and promotion.

Yes. You must complete at least six live client case studies, usually with friends or family members who are comfortable being photographed for tutor feedback and assessment. Continuing with additional case studies after the course will help you improve your speed, accuracy and confidence.

No specialist design software is required. You need moderate digital skills for using a web browser, basic documents, the learning platform and social media apps. Canva training is included for students who have not used it before.

Applicants must:

• Be aged 18 or over.
• Have a competent level of spoken and written English, equivalent to IELTS Level 6.
• Have moderate digital literacy.
• Have access to a laptop or tablet. A larger screen is recommended for online learning.

You will be assessed through short quizzes and practical tasks completed during the modules, plus a final assessment based on six client case studies. Final certificates are awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction level.

With a colour analysis qualification, you can work as an independent colour analyst or use the skill within personal styling, fashion, beauty, hair, interior design, visual merchandising, branding, retail training and creative direction. You can also develop workshops, corporate sessions, media work and public speaking opportunities. See how LCS graduates are building their careers in the Talent Directory.

After completing the Advanced Diploma, you can progress to the Sub-Season Colour Analysis Masterclass Certificate. This advanced training builds on the Four Seasons method and teaches the full 12-sub-season approach for more detailed, personalised client recommendations.
