What is a personal stylist and what do they do?

A personal stylist works one-to-one with clients to help them look and feel their best in what they wear. This typically includes a style assessment, wardrobe edit, and personal shopping, tailored to the client’s body shape, lifestyle, and personality rather than following generic trends. The goal is to build a wardrobe that feels authentic to the client and makes getting dressed easier and more enjoyable.

You train through an accredited course that combines styling theory with practical, hands-on skills. The London College of Style’s Personal Styling (Female Clients) Advanced Diploma is an 8-week online course covering body shape and proportion, style personality, wardrobe edits, personal shopping, lingerie and shapewear advice, and how to set up a styling business. Training includes live weekly masterclasses, tutor feedback, and practice sessions with real clients.

No prior experience is required. Many students join with a natural eye for style and a passion for helping people, rather than a fashion industry background. The course is built to take you from enthusiastic beginner to a confident, paid professional, teaching both the technical skills and the client-facing confidence you need.

Is the course online or in person?

The course is delivered entirely online, so you can train from anywhere in the world. It includes live weekly masterclasses, a WhatsApp community group, and practical challenges you complete with friends or family acting as practice clients.

The course runs for 8 weeks, with one module unlocking each week. You’ll work with practice clients partway through the course and complete a final assessment in the last week. You can’t fast-track it, but you keep lifetime access to the learning platform afterwards.

Yes. You’ll be asked to find two practice clients, typically friends or family, to complete your practical assignments. You can also pair up with other students in the group and take turns acting as each other’s practice client if needed

Course fees are reviewed annually. Always check the official course page for the current price, since figures quoted elsewhere can go out of date. Instalment plans are typically available, splitting the fee into three equal, interest-free payments.

Yes. Personal stylists in the UK commonly charge per session, with rates varying widely depending on experience, location, and specialism. Many stylists charge roughly £75 to £300 per session for general personal styling work, with premium and celebrity-level stylists charging considerably more. Because most personal stylists are self-employed, overall income depends on how many clients you see and how you package your services (single sessions, wardrobe packages, or ongoing styling memberships) rather than a fixed salary.

A personal stylist focuses on curating a client’s overall look and wardrobe, offering broader guidance on style identity, proportion, and outfit-building. A personal shopper focuses specifically on selecting and purchasing items in-store or online, often based on a stylist’s brief. Many professionals, including LCS graduates, offer both services as part of the same client relationship.

Colour analysis is a separate, complementary skill rather than a required part of this course. Many personal stylists choose to add it later, since knowing a client’s most flattering colours strengthens the styling advice you can offer. If you’re interested, London College of Style also runs a dedicated Colour Analysis for Creatives Advanced Diploma.

  • Access to a laptop or tablet for tasks like mood boards, templates, and portfolio creation

Assessment is a mix of short quizzes and practical tasks completed throughout the modules, plus a final assessment based on your work with practice clients. Certificates are awarded with a Pass, Merit, or Distinction depending on performance.

Graduates go on to build independent personal styling businesses, work in employed styling roles for retail brands or department stores, become personal shoppers, or specialise in areas like corporate image consulting, event styling, or social media content creation. The skills also transfer well into brand collaboration, public speaking, and media work.

Once you’ve completed this diploma, many graduates go on to add a complementary specialism, such as the Colour Analysis for Creatives Advanced Diploma, or progress to more advanced business development training to help grow their client base and pricing confidence.

Part One – Live Online Masterclass

Your training begins with a live online theory session where you’ll explore the principles behind the 12-season colour analysis system.

Together, we’ll revisit the foundations of seasonal colour analysis before introducing the colour dimensions that create the sub-seasons.

  • This masterclass has been designed for qualified colour analysts who already have a sound understanding of seasonal colour analysis and are ready to progress beyond identifying the four primary seasons.

    Applicants should:

    • Hold a recognised Colour Analysis qualification.
    • Have a good understanding of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter colour analysis.
    • Be confident identifying clients’ primary seasons.
    • Have practical experience carrying out colour analysis consultations.
    • Ideally have completed around 20 client colour analyses before attending the course.

What is colour analysis?

Colour analysis is a professional method used to identify the colours that best complement a person’s skin tone, hair and eyes. A trained colour analyst uses fabric drapes and a structured process to assess warm or cool undertones and identify the most flattering seasonal palette. Clients can then use that personalised palette when choosing clothing, makeup and hair colour.

Colour analysis works by comparing carefully selected fabric drapes against the face. The analyst looks at how each colour affects the complexion, including brightness, shadows, redness and overall balance. Colours that match the client’s undertone create harmony, while unsuitable colours can make the skin look dull or uneven. The analyst then identifies the seasonal palette that suits the client best.

The Four Seasons method groups colour palettes into Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Spring and Autumn are warm, while Summer and Winter are cool. Each season also differs in brightness, softness and depth. LCS colour analysis training develops this foundation through colour psychology, secondary influences and an introduction to the 12-sub-season system. After qualifying, students can progress to the Sub-Season Colour Analysis Masterclass Certificate.

How do I train as a colour analyst?

To train as a colour analyst, choose an accredited colour analysis course that combines theory with practical draping and real client case studies. The LCS Advanced Diploma is a 9-week colour analysis course online covering colour theory, the Four Seasons method, colour psychology, genetics, in-person and online draping, client consultations and business setup. Training includes live weekly masterclasses, tutor feedback and six client case studies.

No previous colour analysis or design experience is required. This course starts with the foundations and develops your technical knowledge, practical skills and confidence week by week. An interest in colour, style or helping clients is useful, but the professional methods are taught during the course.

The Advanced Diploma runs for 9 weeks, with one teaching module released each week. You complete practical work, case studies and the final assessment alongside the course. Modules are paced to support learning, and you retain lifetime access to the learning platform after completion.

Allow approximately 3 to 4 hours each week for video lessons, live sessions, practical challenges and assessments. You may need additional time to complete your six client case studies.

No specialist design software is required. You need moderate digital skills for using a web browser, basic documents, the learning platform and social media apps. Canva training is included for students who have not used it before.

Applicants must:

• Be aged 18 or over.
• Have a competent level of spoken and written English, equivalent to IELTS Level 6.
• Have moderate digital literacy.
• Have access to a laptop or tablet. A larger screen is recommended for online learning.

What does an interior designer do?

Interior designers work with private clients on homes and living spaces, or with businesses on offices, retail stores, and other commercial spaces, always balancing the client’s needs, budget, and personal taste or brand identity.

You train through an accredited course covering design theory, technical skills, and business setup. The London College of Style’s Interior Design Residential Diploma is an 11-week online course built for complete beginners through to those with some existing design experience. No prior qualification is required, just a genuine passion for interior design.

This diploma focuses specifically on residential interior design, homes, apartments, and other living spaces, since this is the natural starting point for most new designers. The course does introduce commercial interior design concepts too, and graduates who want to specialise further can progress onto a dedicated Commercial Advanced Diploma.

Your Personal Styling Advanced Diploma and Colour Analysis Certificate are awarded based on this submitted work.

This Residential Diploma focuses on homes and private living spaces, the natural entry point for most new interior designers. The Commercial Advanced Diploma builds on those foundations for students who want to specialise in office, retail, or other commercial spaces. Many students complete the Residential Diploma first before progressing to the Commercial course.
