FAQ

What does an interior designer do?

An interior designer creates spaces that are both beautiful and functional, working on everything from colour, lighting, and materials to furniture, layout, and finishing touches. Interior designers work with private clients on homes and living spaces, or with businesses on offices, retail stores, and other commercial spaces, always balancing the client’s needs, budget, and personal taste or brand identity.

You train through an accredited course covering design theory, technical skills, and business setup. The London College of Style’s Interior Design Residential Diploma is an 11-week online course built for complete beginners through to those with some existing design experience. No prior qualification is required, just a genuine passion for interior design.

This diploma focuses specifically on residential interior design, homes, apartments, and other living spaces, since this is the natural starting point for most new designers. The course does introduce commercial interior design concepts too, and graduates who want to specialise further can progress onto a dedicated Commercial Advanced Diploma.

How long is the course and how is it structured?

The course runs for 11 weeks entirely online, with live weekly masterclasses (around 1.5 to 2 hours each), pre-recorded video content, and weekly challenges set through Google Classroom. All masterclasses are recorded, so you can catch up if you miss a live session.

This course teaches you to use SketchUp and Canva to create technical layouts, 3D renderings, and professional client presentations. Both are used throughout training as part of the course, with no additional specialist software purchase required.

No. The course is designed for complete beginners as well as those with some transferable design experience. You’ll need a good command of English (IELTS Level 6 or equivalent), to be 18 or older, and access to a laptop or tablet with basic digital literacy.

Yes. On successful completion you receive two certificates: a Diploma Certificate accredited by the London College of Style and the British Accreditation Council, plus CPD Certification awarding 40 hours of Continued Professional Development points. Graduates also receive complimentary student membership to the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID).

Course fees are reviewed annually, so always check the official course page for the current price. Interest-free instalment plans are typically available, splitting the fee into equal payments.

Yes. The course is written to support students launching their own freelance interior design business, covering how to attract clients, price your services, and manage projects professionally, alongside the practical design skills themselves. Many graduates go on to work with private residential clients, developers, estate agents, and architects.

Earnings vary widely depending on experience, location, and whether you’re freelance or employed. Freelance interior designers commonly charge either a day rate, an hourly rate, or a percentage of the total project budget, with residential projects for private clients being the typical starting point for newly qualified designers before moving into larger or commercial work. As with most creative freelance careers, income depends heavily on how many clients you take on and how you price your services, rather than a fixed salary.

Graduates go on to work in interior design for homes and offices, commercial interior projects, set design for television, music, or fashion, estate agency home dressing, retail interior design, and store or mall design for brands. Many also launch their own freelance interior design businesses.

Most of the course can be completed from home using SketchUp, Canva, and other digital tools. Some challenges encourage practical, real-world elements too, such as sourcing fabric swatches or researching in-store materials, but if that’s not possible, your tutors will help you find a digital alternative, and you’re welcome to use a friend or family member as a practice client throughout.

Yes, this is where your formal assessment actually takes place. Across the six weeks of the Start & Grow programme, you’ll work through a series of case studies with role-play clients, submitting this work as you go with individual feedback from your tutor. Your Personal Styling Advanced Diploma and Colour Analysis Certificate are awarded based on this submitted work.

This Residential Diploma focuses on homes and private living spaces, the natural entry point for most new interior designers. The Commercial Advanced Diploma builds on those foundations for students who want to specialise in office, retail, or other commercial spaces. Many students complete the Residential Diploma first before progressing to the Commercial course.
