Simon Melber

I am an editorial fashion photographer and former magazine editor & publisher with more than 20 years experience publishing and editing consumer magazines. A self-taught photographer (since picking up my first SLR film camera in 1982), I combined my love of photography with a post-grad diploma in journalism to enter the world of magazines – first as a freelance photo-journalist, then as features editor and finally editor.

In 1995 I launched my own international consumer magazine (in print) which went on to have sales success in 17 countries worldwide and was one of the first magazines to be accepted on to Apple’s fledgling iTunes NewsStand. Further magazine launches followed in 1998, 2001 and 2004 and with experience in print, digital, web and social media, I like to think I bring a wealth of applied magazine and publishing experience to my photography lectures at LCS.

As well as shooting fashion and portraits for magazines and other publications (on both film & digital), I also shoot fashion and commercial content for brands and designers. I believe that the best photography is simple yet elegant – conveying a message in the clearest, most forthright and evocative way possible. My own work is stripped-back, raw, uncluttered and fun… simple, direct storytelling in line with my journalistic background.
